It is around 60~65-millimeter-long when spreading its wings. The fore wings have orange patterns in a black ground. The hind wings are mostly brown but only the outer margin is orange with one black-spotted line. There is no difference in patterns between males and females.
The butterflies emerge two to four times a year and inhabit in sunny grass near the edge of low parts of forest or mountain, so there rarely live in high part of mountains. They tend to fly towards sap of oak tree, rotten fruit or filth as well as suck nectar from mum or thistle. They are usually well-observed in the flower beds made near villages in fall. Their food plant is boehmeria tricuspis and survive winter as butterflies.
