March to September
Korea, Japan, China and Russia
It is around 50~65-millimeter-long when spreading its wings. Its wings are yellow with red spot on the upper side of fore and hind winds each. The front edge of fore wings finely sticks out.
The butterflies emerge once a year and inhabit in valley of mountains and near forests. They aestivate from late June to early July, and become active from late August to September. Then, they survive winter as butterflies and become active again until the following March to April. Both males and females feed on nectar from thistle, daisy fleabane, and crape-myrtle. It is sometimes observed that males drink water in groups. Females lay their eggs one by one in stem of buckthorn, their food plants or on the surface of a new leaf.
