Ascalaphidae
May to September
Korea and Japan
The body and fore wings are around 25- and 15-millimeter-long respectively. They have black head and compound eyes, and yellowish brown thorax, abdomen and legs. Antennas are long as much as the length of wings, and its ends are expanded thick, which looks like heart. Wings are transparent and yellowish, and the band of fore wings is black.
Imagoes can be observed in low mountains or grass. Females usually lay their eggs in dry branches or leaves. Larvae look like antlion, larva of hagenomyia micans. Larvae eat small insects by hiding themselves in leaves on the ground. They survive winter as larvae and emerge once a year.
