It is around 14~15-millimeter-long. They are relatively big and the entire body color is dark brown. Head and spur of forehead are covered with yellow-white powder. Its abdomen is yellowish brown with black bands on each segment, whose area is a little different depending on the emergence period. Males have compound eyes sticking each other but females, compound eyes separated. Its larvae have a long-tail shape.
The larvae are also called ‘tailed maggot’, which usually live in the mucky water. They breathe through tail-shaped spur, longer than the length of body. They survive winter as imagoes and can often be observed in areas with flowers excepts winter.
