Papilionidae
April to August
Korea, Japan and China
It is around 45~140-millimeter-long when spreading its wings. It is giant but the size varies greatly. It has black wings with tiny metallic-like green or blue scales. It is similar to crow swallowtail butterfly, but they are distinguished with big androconium, quite large half-moon red patterns on the upper side of the hind wings, turquoise band on the upper side of the wings, white bands both on the lower sides of the fore and hind wings.
They emerge twice a year and usually inhabit in the valley of the mountains. It is sometimes observed that males drink water from the valley or swamp in groups. Both males and females gather and suck nectar from thistles, Korean early lilac, groundsel, and tiger lily. Habits and feature of caterpillars are similar to that of crow swallowtail butterfly. Its food plants are rutaceae and cork trees.
