Males and females are around 20~50- and 20~35-millimeter-long respectively. Males are lightly brilliant black, and some small types are sometimes very brilliant. In terms of small males, although individual can show differences, they usually have red color on the thorax. The big mandible of males is divaricated and faces forward. In terms of females, its big mandible is relatively short compared to males’ but it is very sharp and robust enough to peck holes in trees. Females have a line dividing compound eyes into two, almost to the end.
They inhabit in various types of broadleaf trees in hills or mountains, and tend to move towards lights. They are one of the most common species out of various types of stag beetles in Korea.
