Males and females are around 26~53- and 25~45-millimeter-long respectively. They are big-size species with brilliant black color. The big mandible with a thick spur inside sticking up to the front is thick, crooked, and relatively short compared to its body. The back area of prothorax is wide with front and back of the middle being deeply dug. Its elytra have eight to ten stipple patterns, which are big and clear for females but small for males.
It is usually active at night and moves towards lights. The lifespan of imagoes is around 3 to 4 years. It is forbidden to take them out of the country for the protection of the species. They mostly inhabit in low-lying areas with abundant oak species forest rather than high mountains. Larvae usually feed on oak species and particularly, they are mostly found in dead oak trees.
