    It is around 55~70-millimeter-long when spreading its wings. Males are quite small compared to females and its spurs articulated to the inner distal end are developed. Females are bigger than males but has no spurs articulated to the inner distal end. Males have reddish orange patterns in a black ground and females have white patterns in a black ground. Middle area of fore wings and the front margin of hind wings are deep orange-yellow.

  • ecology

    The butterflies emerge once a year, and inhabit in sunny shrub land in the mountains or paths in the forest. They usually move towards sap of Mongolian oak and oriental oak as well as swamp on the ground, or animal carcass or excretion. They survive winter as caterpillars in groups under leaves rolled.
