Nymphalidae
June to August
Korea, China and Russia
It is around 80~110-millimeter-long when spreading its wings. Males are smaller than females, and have a darker black ground on the upper side of wings. Females have bigger white patterns in the middle of hind wings than that of males. The reason why they are named that is because when their wings are folded, the bottom part silverly shines.
The butterflies emerge once a year and inhabit in mountains full of bushy copse. Males tend to move towards swamp in the forest paths and filth in the morning, and quickly fly around between trees looking for females in the afternoon. Females are usually active in the afternoon as they gather at sap of elm tree, or sometimes sit on swamp on the ground or filth. Food plants are elm tree, lacebark elm and zelkova tree, and they survive winter as caterpillars.
